Timeline of American Baseball
This page is dedicated to The Dollop’s darling, The Rube.
September, 1845: New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club was founded. One of the founders, volunteer firefighter and bank clerk Alexander Joy Cartwright, created a set of familiar rules: diamond-shaped infield, foul lines, and the three-strikes rule.
1846: first official game of baseball in the United States was played in Hoboken, New Jersey
1876: National League of Professional Baseball Clubs is founded by William Hulbert with 8 original teams:
- Boston Red Stockings (now the Atlanta Braves)
- Chicago White Stockings (now the Chicago Cubs)
- Cincinnati Red Stockings
- Hartford Dark Blues
- Louisville Grays
- Mutual of New York
- Philadelphia Athletics
- St. Louis Brown Stockings
I guess teams initially named themselves by just looking down at their uniforms. Which might mean that the Mutuals were wearing matching longjohns?
1869: Cincinnati Red Stockings became America’s first professional baseball team/club
1901: American League is founded as National League’s rival
1903: First World Series was held. The American League’s New York Yankees have won more World Series championships than any other team in baseball, 26.
